UPDATE: Campaign now closed. The Bill passed the NSW parliament with amendments from the Animal Justice Party that improved the outcome. All amendments put up by the Shooters Party failed.
After a decade of lobbying, the New South Wales Government has finally tabled legislation to crack down on puppy factories.
It’s not perfect, no piece of legislation ever is. But it is still vital that it passes.
The key points of the Bill are:
- A cap on the number of female breeding dogs to 20
- An exemption to have 50 female breeding dogs until 2035 for existing puppy factories
- Litter limits of 5 (with a maximum of 3 caesarean sections)
- All breeders must apply for a BIN Number (breeder identification number) and cannot apply if convicted of animal cruelty
- Staff to dog ratio 1-20
And unfortunately, the Bill will not ban the sale of factory farmed puppies from pet shops.
Even though the Bill isn’t everything we want, it is important it passes to see the beginning of the end the suffering of dogs on puppy factories across the state.
It is for dogs like Strawberry (pictured above) - a boxer who literally rotted from the inside out on a NSW puppy factory after giving birth to puppies to be sold in a pet shop.
The puppy farmers and their lobby groups have approached the Shooters party and the Liberal National party to weaken this bill by introducing a series of extreme amendments.
They want the cap of 20 dogs removed and the staff to dog ratio raised.
We need you to urgently email NSW MP’s urging them to support the Bill and not to allow the puppy farming industry to weaken this Bill.
