Letter to Premier of Victoria John Brumby

Dear Mr Brumby,

Victoria's companion animals are urgently requiring advocacy and the only people who can effectively apply this advocacy are those who have been elected to Government.
 
On average 350 healthy dogs are killed every day in Australia's pounds simply because we haven't had enough time to find them a home.
Puppy factories are commercial enterprises where companion animals are treated as commodities with no consideration for their physiological or psychological needs, many of these factories also deprive the animals of even their basic physical requirements.
The financial success for puppy factories relies on the exploitation of the breeding dogs and their puppies and the consequent deprivation of fundamental needs such as exercise, play and social interaction. Minimum expenditure for maximum profit.
There is a considerable financial cost to the community due to the infrastructure required to house abandoned animals including the employment of staff to kill the majority that are not re-homed.

A clean and gleaming automated puppy factory that is registered with Council and passes every inspection is every bit horrendous for the dogs who never leave their enclosures and are treated as a breeding machine.

It is also every bit as unacceptable as a way of producing puppies who are to live in homes with people. The puppy has not had the benefit of a normal developmental environment, nor can anyone determine anything meaningful about its parents' temperaments. No factory "clean", "model" or otherwise is the answer for our pets.

Mr Brumby, I request an urgent amendment to the Legislation. I urge you to please make your decision based on the animals who we as a society have a duty of care for and pass Oscar's Law.
Ban the sale of animals in pet shops.
Abolish puppy factories.
Commence running a real campaign about responsible pet ownership and introduce subsidized desexing programs.

I do not want my tax dollars used to prop up a system where I know thousands of healthy companion animals will be killed whilst Councils continue to issue permits for more puppy factories.

Letter to Leader of the Liberal Party Ted Baillieu

Dear Mr Baillieu,

Companion animals play an enormously important role in our lives. They bring us comfort and companionship and fulfill many crucial roles. People who share their lives with companion animals are reported to be healthier, happier and enjoy greater longevity than those who live without animals.

Yet every year in Australia unwanted companion animals are killed in Australia's council pounds. How could we allow this to happen? Sadly for all that these animals give to us, their companionship, support and unconditional love, we sentence them to death each and every day for nothing more than the profit of an industry who actually costs the tax payer millions of dollars in cleaning up the mess made by their unscrupulous business practices.

Puppy Factories are commercial enterprises where companion animals are treated as commodities with no consideration for physiological or psychological needs, many of these factories also deprive the animals of even their basic physical requirements. The pups bred on these factories are sold to pet shops or over the internet. The breeding dogs are kept confined in horrendous conditions and are continually in a cycle of pregnancy or feeding puppies. When they can no longer produce puppies they are killed and replaced.

Our society has a duty of care to these animals. There are many things which need to be addressed but the first and most important issue is the way in which animals are being kept, bred and sold. Currently the need to make a profit by the businesses who sell animals, conflicts with the welfare of the animals being sold.

Almost every industry is regulated in some way to ensure best practices. Yet the pet industry remains free to do what ever it needs to make a profit. Even if the activities involve the suffering of animals and the death of thousands of unwanted companion animals.

In this election year I ask that you put companion animal welfare on the political agenda and lobby on behalf of all pet owners for a review of the current "puppy factory" legislation which is totally inadequate and has not been enforced in Victoria since it was introduced in 1994.

Please introduce new legislation - "Oscar's Law", which will abolish puppy factories and ban the sale of animals in pet shops.

Please introduce new legislation - "Oscar's Law", which will abolish puppy factories and ban the sale of animals in pet shops.
